Emergency Care Partners (ECP) is proud to kick off the new year with our “Team Member Spotlight of the Month” series, highlighting some of the best and brightest among our partnership groups.
Mark Laperouse, MD, FACEP, brings his energy and leadership to our Louisiana-based partner, Professional Emergency Physicians Associates (PEPA). Dr. Laperouse serves as Chief of Emergency Medicine at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, LA. Our Lady of the Lake is a Level I Trauma Center, part of the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System, and the busiest emergency department in the state of Louisiana. Dr. Laperouse is a vital leader of the PEPA team and an indispensable member of the ECP family of partner groups.
Dr. Laperouse earned his Bachelor of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology from Tulane University. He received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and completed his emergency medicine residency at Shands Jacksonville, College of Medicine, University of Florida Medical School. Throughout his career Dr. Laperouse has been the recipient of several awards including the 2009 EMRA/FERNE Sim Wars National Champion, University of Florida-Jacksonville’s 2010 Emergency Medicine Resident of the Year, and University of Florida-Jacksonville’s 2010 Ann Harwood-Nuss Resident Advocate Award. Dr. Laperouse continues to advocate tirelessly for his fellow physicians and nurses and has a passion for team building. Facilitating multiple continuing education programs, including Journal Clubs, and speaking at annual Advanced Practice Provider (APP) boot camps, Dr. Laperouse is a supportive mentor, role model, and leader for all aspects of the emergency department.
In addition to his clinical and leadership roles, Dr. Laperouse also serves as Director of Medical Informatics for Emergency Care Partners (ECP). In this position, he spearheads efforts from a clinical perspective to develop cutting-edge medical analytics reporting capabilities to obtain, dissect and administer real-time data. The platform utilizes any electronic health record (EHR) data and transforms it into relatable information that communicates with customizable dashboards. Working with real-time data allows Dr. Laperouse and his team to take both big picture and granular views of all data points to enable coaching, counseling and/or justification for action.
“We have separated ourselves from other ER groups by instituting this process. I think a lot of ER groups have turned into staffing companies. While we staff emergency departments, we are an ER management company. These different platforms and dashboards allow us to manage the department and our providers. We need to know when to have more coverage, we need to know when to have less coverage so that we can keep both the hospital and the group viable.” – Dr. Laperouse
As a charismatic and respected leader in his field, Dr. Laperouse’s expertise was called upon during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic by national news outlets to provide critical updates on hospital capacity and vaccinations. He was the face of emergency medicine for Southern Louisiana during the Pandemic. More recently, he participated in a radio interview to educate listeners on this year’s flu season and when flu symptoms warrant a trip to the emergency room.
When he’s not in the emergency room, you will likely find Dr. Laperouse hunting and fishing with his wife and four boys. To manage stress, Dr. Laperouse is also an avid runner. Dr. Laperouse’s passion is lifting those around him with his contagious, optimistic energy. In Dr. Laperouse’s own words “I thrive on being positive. Life is too short not to.”
